The classification & characteristics of glow plugs
In view of the construction, there are two types of the glow plugs;
one is coil type where the heating coil is exposed by the heat resistance pipe(sheath).
By the 1970s, the coil type was the main, but the
sheath type is now the most popular taken over all the other types of glow plugs.
More ever, the sheath type is divied into three groups for the heating time as following
types.
| Standard type | To 800'C after 20-25 sec the resistance of the heating coil does not vary from temperature, and the glow plug draws the constant current. |
|
| Quicktype | To 800'C after 15-20 sec The coil resistance increases as the temperature goes up, and the current is almost double of the nominal current when the glow is engaged, and this makes possible to heat up quickly. |
|
| OGS type | To 900'C after approx. 10 sec The electronics controller and relays control the engaged time and current draw for the quick starting, and also stable running of engine and reduction of smoke at cranking. |
